Are you realizing your full potential in business and in life? Are you afraid of certain challenges holding you back from what you want to accomplish? My guest today will show you just how easy it can be to reach your potential and hit your goals. To him, when you achieve a positive mindset, you will be prepared for every challenge that comes your way.
My guest today is Don Mann. Don a motivational speaker and is a retired Navy SEAL who was a member of SEAL Team SIX. Don is also a New York Times Best Selling Author. His new book, Reaching Beyond Boundaries: A Navy SEAL’s Guide to Achieving Everything You’ve Ever Imagined, offers stories and endless inspiration for those struggling to do more.
The Combat Mindset
You may have heard that the military practices a combat mindset as often as possible. What is the combat mindset? Listen at 4:05 where Don explains how the key is to have a positive mindset that you can do anything you put your mind to. Even if you don’t reach the very top goal you set, you will still accomplish more than you ever thought you could along the way.
Following this mindset is not just for the military. Whether you are a student, athlete, doctor, office manager, or stay-at-home mom, you will achieve the success you want when you believe that you can. The next time you are thinking of a goal, try to think optimistically. When you truly achieve a positive mindset, you will see your confidence grow, and you will be more likely to take on new challenges.
Always Come Prepared
The Navy SEALS have a saying: train like you fight, and fight like you train. They purposely make training more difficult than the actual missions would be. At 6:10, Don discusses how training for the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden made the real mission seem easy.
By making your training as difficult as possible, you can achieve a positive mindset in both work and life. You will have already faced the “worst” scenarios, and you will have the confidence to handle challenges that are now easy by comparison.
Find the Right Coping Mechanism
How do you respond when faced with a challenge at work or in life? For Don, one of the biggest challenges in his life came during a mission in Central America. Listen at 7:48 where he details the story of his capture, and how it led one member of his team to crack under the pressure.
At 14:25, Don explains how it is important to handle things in your own way. While they were captured, he and his team members each had a different way to cope with the situation. He chose to perform light exercises (push-ups, sit-ups, etc.), while others cried or prayed. Don was never concerned with how others handled things, and focused on himself.
Keeping an Optimistic Outlook
Life throws challenges at us at every moment. Listen at 16:40 where Don lays out how he gets through every bad situation. He practices “the combat mindset” which involves always keeping an optimistic outlook. This idea can work with you, even if you never face a traditional battlefield. By believing that you will survive every challenge on the path to your goals, you will set yourself up for success.
Stay tuned for part 2 of my interview with Don Mann where we discuss how keeping that combat mindset can take you further than you ever thought possible.
