Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable: Mark Llewhellin

Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable: Mark Llewhellin

What do you do when life throws challenges at you? Whether you are the type to confront problems head on, or you struggle with pushing through, getting comfortable at being uncomfortable should be a goal of yours. My guest today is here to tell you how he has become comfortable being uncomfortable and pushing himself beyond his limits, both in life and in physical training.

My guest today is Mark Llewhellin, the author of 6 books on motivating yourself and changing your life. His latest book, Man the F Up, details how to overcome challenges when life throws curveballs at you. Mark is an accomplished runner, who has completed the Marathon des Sables, a six-day ultramarathon in the Sahara Desert.

This week’s episode of The Profit Express is brought to you by Corbett Public Relations, Promoting and Protecting Businesses and Brands for over 30 years.

Making Yourself Believe What You Say

One of the most common pieces of advice people get when they want to change their lives is to practice positive affirmations. At 5:35, Mark discusses how this method actually helped him go from struggling in his Army troop to being the runner he is today. He had a moment where he needed to change, and he started to tell himself what he knew he needed to hear. Whether your goal is to be a great runner, a confident salesperson, or a better public speaker, the more you tell yourself something, the more likely you are to believe it.

Overcoming Family Demons

Mark’s family has a long history of suicide. Listen at 13:20 as he speaks on what he learned from the struggles of his family members. Mark believes that the most difficult times in his life were difficult because of the thoughts he forced on himself.

Stopping Self Victimhood

We are all facing more challenges than ever due to COVID-19 and the resulting lockdowns. However, Mark believes that people today are too quick to play the role of a victim. At 19:20, he discusses how important it is to be grateful. Even with his challenges, he feels lucky to have the life he has. His advice to those who are struggling? Sit down and come up with 20 things you are grateful for. While this exercise won’t solve your problems, it can help you change your mindset.

“Difficult” is What You Make It

Mark is an accomplished runner, completing the grueling Marathon des Sables. This six-day, 155-mile race goes through the Sahara Desert, and it is considered to be one of the most challenging ultramarathons in the world.

Listen at 31:00 as Mark discusses how for him, this was not the most challenging race he’s run. Difficulty varies based on the level that a person is at. When you are faced with a “difficulty” task, ask yourself how hard you want to push yourself.

Getting More Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

One of the biggest lessons Mark has learned in his life is that you will never get to success without facing some discomfort along the way. At 48:05, he speaks about being more self-aware in life. One day it will be your last day on earth – think long and hard about what you will regret not doing, and frame your goals accordingly.

The Power of Being Thoughtful

People Don’t Come with Expiration Dates

“Oh man, I better eat this before it expires!”

How many times have you gone through your fridge and said something like this in your life? A carton of milk, a package of raw chicken, a container of fresh strawberries. These things all come with expiration dates. If you don’t use them in time, they go bad and end up in the garbage, simply to be replaced on your next trip to the store. We know we better savor these items before it’s too late. (more…)
